Associations
Knights of St. Columba
The Knights of St. Columba are a lay fraternal of Catholic men.

It is the largest lay organization in the United Kingdom, numbering some 700 brothers in the Brentwood Diocese alone.

The Order was started in 1919 and achieved such things as work on Catholic Emancipation in the 1920’s, the Papal visit stewarding in 1981 and to celebrate the Millennium, raised in the region of £250, 000 for Wells for Water in India and Africa.

Currently the Knights in Brentwood are developing a youth programme in conjunction with the Diocesan Youth Service.

Social functions are held both at Provincial and local levels.

The Brentwood Council of the Knights of St Columba held their annual Dinner and Dance in November at the Bentley Golf Club. KSC Council 173 covers several parishes and welcomed guests from most, including the Cathedral Parish and our own parish of St Joseph. When proposing a toast to the guests, current chairman (Grand Knight), Frank Dodson, said that it was very encouraging to see so many parishioners supporting this type of function which had declined in popularity in some areas. Their attendance helped the Knights to continue to support various charitable causes such as CAFOD, Right to Life, Brentwood Ecclesiastical Education Fund and the Diocesan Youth Project.

Fr Dominic Howarth, Diocesan Director of Youth, and an ex-parishioner, was warmly welcomed as guest of honour. He commended the Knights of St Columba for their consistent and loyal support of the clergy and in particular their practical contribution to youth events such as the Youth Day held in the summer at Aylesford Priory.

The function was most enjoyable, providing a good opportunity for discussion with friends and to dance to excellent live music. The Knights have already earmarked a similar date for an event in 2006 so watch this space!
